I think I got screwed out of windows vista home premium. Appartently they are giving everyone that orders a 1420 as of now home premium included in the price. Where as I ordered my 1420 8 days ago, and have home basic with premium as an option. GREAT. Basic can't be that bad... right?
-
I still think you could have gone with the Premium if you really wanted the feel of the Aero and stuff.... Try to talk with the CSR and see if you can get yours with Home Premium instead of Basic mentioning the current change on the website....
But Vista Basic still features almost all the key features of Vista and I guess you wont be disappointed much.... The Aero interface also consumes more RAM and eventually you will get bored with Aero after some period of time -
Well I called Dell about 2 minutes ago, lol. its about 1 in the morning. And they called me back it was weird but their customer sales wasn't open so the lady gave me a case number and asked me to call them tomorrow. I think I have a pretty good chance in getting vista premium dont you think? And if that CSR doesn't help me out I'll just call back. And what is aero exactly? lol
-
After ordering mine I thought I had made the same mistake and called up Dell. I was told I would have to completely reorder which would void the $300 coupon I used. Thankfully I was wrong and actually had ordered premium.

Hmm these woudl give you more info :

It seems that even with a relatively new machine and dedicated graphics, Aero is still a lot of overhead.

i am getting a basic. the aero sh** doesnt appeals to me to me much.
-
So what you guys are saying is that I should keep basic to help my computer perform faster. I am currently on the phone trying to haggle my way into a vista premium, is it worth it?
-
The value of Aero and all the other Premium stuff can only be quantified by the individual user, though. So get it if you can to try it out for yourself, otherwise it's a leap of faith to believe someone else's "you're not gonna need it".
Good luck.

Yah, well what they told me after transfering me 8 times, giving me 8 different numbers, "we'll have to cancel the order." I then finally got a hold of a manager (which takes unbelievable amount of time) and said that I wanted premium shipped to me, he couldn't do it. So after about 2 minutes of thinking I said I wanted to keep my current system, but I want HIM to "prioritize" my order as he put it in his words. Which means mine will be moved up on the list of shipping, he is also throwing in free overnight shipping so I can get it faster.
-
Don't count on overnight shipping :/
They promised me that too. But it only saved me a day or so since it was the weekend for me -
30 more bucks for a 3D program rolodex and transparent title bars..no thank you. I run XP in the classic view, never did like the new layout it gave.

Get Premium FOR SURE! Basic is the poor man's Vista, and Aero is definitely worth it.
So try your best to get them to put on Premium, you won't regret it, I promise. -
-
You can enable Aero...using various methods.
Search it up. -

Home Basic does have Aero,
like i said before Home Basic uses Aero Express and Home Premium uses Aero Glass. In terms of interface, the only difference between the two is Home Premium have a semi-transparency thing that works 5% of the time, and Home Premium have that flip3d, live thumbnail thing. -
just a random thought, does the vista basic thing take advantage of the core 2 duo processor?
-
Yh ofcourse it does otherwise the laptops wouldnt have Basic on it.
-
There are quite a few differences... premium offers Windows Media Center for example...
-
Just buy Ultimate OEM and reformat your rig at your own convenience. Beyond Aero and the MC you can then get enhanced notebook security features and optimization that will be of use to you.

Try calling the modify department. The modify department can sometimes modify order and keep your rebates etc.. intact.. However, they still have to cancel order and rebuild it.. and you go to the end of the line. But the modify department are the only ones that can do it.. if they can do it at all.
You can upgrade to premium later on with MS anytime upgrade dvd. On MS site it cost a hundred bucks to upgrade. I see other sites advertise academic versions for around 70 dollars. So if you are going to lose out on your rebate, your still better off just paying 70/100 dollars to add it later. -
you can simply get a oem dvd from like newegg or somewhere i have seen premium for under 50$ at times... usually you can find them for around 50$ though on like ebay for the upgrade discs.
aww crap.
