I have an inspiron 1420 laptop, Drive D is my recovery partition.
Is there someway I can backup the entire partition to an image and later I load into a brand new Hard disk? with C: Local drive and D drive for recovery instead of using the vista dvd provided by dell?

I dont know about re-loading it, but I did copy just my partition to my Western D. Ext HD, just to see if I could do it. At first it kept saying that the partition was locked and could not be copied, but I never take no for an answer and kept playing around with it until I finally copied it. And what Im gonna do with it now, I have no Idea! This is the essence of hacking.
