kezza4246,
I moved your thread to the Dell Studio forum, it'll get better results there!
Sam -
Pressing FN + The right arrow key will cycle through the brightness of the backlight and then off.
-

Do you have any other icon on your right arrow key besides the right arrow? It should be a small rectangle with little rays coming out of it if you have a backlit keyboard.
-
no icon on the arrow just on the desktop wen i press fn + right arrow
-
Then yous gots not backlit keyboard son.

I don't think ANY of the retail configurations (available from Staples, Best Buy, etc.) included the Backlit Keyboard. The only way to get it to configure your own via Dell's website (or fine one in the Outlet).
-
I was told by dell the backlit keyboard is not recommended?? I am totally screwed up..it was supposed to be included in the dell studio 17 laptop but wasn"t??Do you have any advice aBOUT IT THANKS
-
Did they give you any reason why it was not recommended? I love my backlit keyboard.
-
-
I know, I didn't think I'd ever have a need for backlight on a laptop. But I have a red backlit Saitek keyboard for my desktop and I like that a lot too. It really helps when you are in a darker room.
-
i love my 24" LCD and my 13" on a dock with wireless keyboard and backlight keys! =D
-
dell led me to beleive the backlit was included..would have gladly paid the extra..sales manager told me they weren't recommending and to buy external logitech...how screwed up am I!! sure p.....d at dell
-
thanks for you insight!!
-
sorry..very frustrated..I am very new at computer stuff..I live in a small town in Ontario..could I take my dell to a computer shop and have them instal a backlit keyboard?I have been going in circles with dell now for over a month..have an eye disease where this feature would be very helpful..thank you
-
-
oh thank you..where should I purchase it from..so happy to hear a solution robin from bobcaygeon
-
caygeoncrew2 just ring dell sales line and tell them what you want. they will do the rest. i did the same thing with my precision.
regards -
thank you very much!! I sure hope I have precision!! thanks again robin
-
A Precision is another line of Dell notebooks. But apparently they will swap out the keyboard for you if you call them.
-
oh boy aren't I stupid!! just got message from dell and they have no intention of helping me with this..will never buy a dell again..between my son and I it is our 4th..thanks for your help robin

-
after a month with dell canada called dell usa and in one minute had backlit part number..it is F484C...was 99.00 but worth getting this over..thank you everybody for help
-
Did you check eBay for the part number? You might be able to find it cheaper.
-

-
I sure don't know how I was notebook newbie yesterday and today I am an enthusiast...should be notebook dummy
-
There is the service guide on support.dell.com if they didn't include directions. As for that title it just changes as you make more posts.
-
thank you!!!
-
And I"ve had problems with puters in the past and dell always makes good.
thumbs up for me always -
hi..did you specify backlit or did they tell you was was included..other than this problem I also like my dell..4th one
-
I have read all sorts of confused people over this..the sales rep even helped me to try and figure out why it wouldn't work..and dell says because I didn't add it onto my order I am SOL..how do you argue with that ..used to be the the customer was always right..I have macular degeneration disease so why would I lie???> have been basically treated as such I appreciate your feedback..2 months ago I would have highly recommended dell...still can't talk to someone whose accent I understand I sure am glad I called dell usa

I got a backlit keyboard from ebay for 20 bucks.
Anyway, to install, turn over the laptop, unplug the power, take out the battery. Under the battery, there will be two screws. Unscrew them, then you should be able to carefully pull the panel that has the media buttons on. Then there will be two screws connecting the keyboard to the computer, unscrew those, and CAREFULLY pull the keyboard back and lay it on the palm rest. Then you will see two connections to the mainboard, a big fat one and a small skinny one. There should be a fat one coming from the keyboard you already have, but no skinny one. Just flip the black flap holding the fat connector in place, and then pull it out. Then put the new keyboard in, and with the black flap up, put in the new fat connector where the old one was, and put the skinny connector into the skinny connector flap. Then push both the flaps back down when you're done putting the connector back in. Then screw everything back, and snap it all together. It's really easy. I may do a tutorial on youtube if I can get my stupid camera to work.

I finally got backlit keyboard..installed it(studio 1735) so now how do I get it to work??? Also do I have to have a flashbois for it to work? back to duh again
-
Did you press FN + Right Arrow? That will toggle through the three settings, high, low, off.
-
I have another backlit keyboard question.
Has anyone figured out a way to set the backlit so it stays on all of the time?
Right now it doesnt come on until you touch a key. -
Have you checked the settings for it in Dell Quickset? I haven't looked, but I will set if I can find something when I get home.
-
-
Where is the Dell Quickset? Is it already installed or do I have to install it?
-
If you did a fresh install you will have to reinstall it. Here it is to install

Where is Quickset? I cannot find where it is located on my computer. I tried to download with the link but it tells me that a newer version is already installed. I cant find it.....
-
It should be here
C:\Program Files\Dell\QuickSet -
Thank you!!! Finally found it. For some reason it was not in quick launch or start menu.

DELL appears to be taking the lead on offering back-lit keyboards- available on Studio 15/17, Latitude E-series (except E5400/E5500) and several Precision models also. The Dell Quickset utility makes the feature simple to customize, which makes it even better.
But there is one oversight, unless there's something I'm missing- the separate options depending on power source. My keyboard is usually set on Bright with a 5-minute duration. That works fine on AC power, but when I'm running on battery I have to remember to manually turn off the backlighting to maximize battery life! -
I also have a new Studio 1735 with the keyboard backlight option. I activated the option in Quickset by clicking the button next to ON. However, the backlight feature doesn't seem to work. Once the feature was activated, I tried that combo over and over, but the keyboard still doesn't light. Thanks for any help you can offer. (I checked my shipping invoice, and it does list the keyboard backlight option as "installed.") I've gone through Dell support more than once about this, but the replies are so far out in left field that they are useless.

1- Hold the 'Fn' key while pressing the Right Arrow key. Each time the Right Arrow is pressed, the keyboard backlighting setting is changed to the next step- the steps being OFF, Dim and Bright. Pressing the Right Arrow key again reverts back to the beginning (OFF).
2- Via the DELL QuickSet utility. Start>All Programs>Dell QuickSet>Keyboard Backlighting. It offers the options of On/Off for the backlighting, Dim or Bright for the brightness and lets you choose when/if to turn off the backlighting after a specified period of inactivity.
