I've been having my Dell Inspiron 6400 since April 2006. Despite the fact that I underestimated my need for disk space, I have been happy with the machine - and it is under heavy use daily - at work and at home. The machine has always been mainly on AC power. And it seems to be common knowledge that Dell batteries are extremely poor. Indeed, after about a year, mine didn't last for more than 30 min, and that time swiftly decreased until around 2 year anniversary, I started getting the message to replace the battery. Which I ignored as it is sitting on AC anyway. So, now, during the past two days I experienced weird issues - the laptop just switched itself off without any warning. I wonder if it could be battery related - I mean, does a laptop need a somewhat functional battery even to run on AC power? I checked, and the laptop doesn't even detect the battery any more. So if someone here bothered reading through my long intro, I'd appreciate some feedback.

That's not battery-related. If it suddenly, and I mean suddenly, shuts itself off even on A/C power, that would be most likely an overheating issue.

oh, thanks, that sounds very reasonable - I had a long weekend of watching movies
and the weather is kinda hot here. so I'll try to give my companion a little rest. -
You might want to give it a cleaning while it rests. Start by blowing out the vents with canned air.
battery dead and ...buried?
