Is it safe to use the notebook without a battery and just use an ac adapter?

I have no idea how Dells work, but my Compaq (and other brands as well)wouldn't work without the battery in the bay -- even when plugged into A/C. Never tried that with my Dell, though.

If it did work, it wouldn't cause any undue harm to your PC.

Its okay that way cause I've always do it that way ;)
but the most efficient way is to plug in a 100% charged battery so your laptop would not charge it and if there's a power failure you'll be safe ;)
