my dell 8600 battery wont charge. It's not the battery and it's not the charger... bought a new battery and borrowed a charger... the laptop runs off the power wire/charger. what you think is broken? battery terminal? dc jack?

Sooner or later all the 8xxx series laptops get there... Seriously, it seems to be a fairly common problem with these notebooks. I had it, too
I was told at Dell I need to replace my motherboard.
Are your AC adapter and battery recognized by the BIOS? If not, chances are that's were the problem lies.
If that is the case then you either get a new motherboard (Dell wants 500$!!!) or a new laptop
I would not recommend eBay, I tried and it turned out the guy was selling the board cos he had exactly the same issue.
Official Dell forums are full of frustrated *xxx users with power issues.
If you can see both the adapter and battery in Bios, then you're luckier then the rest of us. Hope that's the case:wink:
If so, maybe someone else will offer advice. -
Same here..If it slowly charges (over a week) it's not the charging boad but the MOBO. Will it run without the battery insdie and hooked up to the AC? Alos Look in the control panel under power options>power meter tab. Does it have a red X over the icon..if yes motherboard..most likely you can find a new MOBO for less than $150 on ebay if you keep your eyes open..
Some idiot quoted me $300-600 for repairing the problem..I can buy a used laptop for less than that and transfer everything I need..
There's no proportion in pricing for NB hardware.. -
the battery is not recognized.... but i can run off the AC line. I think I bought 3 motherboards off ebay already. Each just dies one after the other after a period of time. This one actually survived, but not battery charging. Stupid guy at computer shop tricked me into buy a new battery because "it's a likely cause" and then all of a sudden, it's no money back for batteries. and yes ur right, you can buy another laptop for about $400...
I was really hoping it's just a lil chip or capacitor or something that can be unsoldered and replaced.
battery wont charge...
