hey guys, just wondering which distro of linux is best for my vostro? would it be the ubuntu, or is there anything better?

specifically, would any 64-bit versions have a performance boost?

Throw in the Live CD, see what happens.

I would stay away from the 64 bit version for now at least. Unless you have 4gb of memory I doubt it would make much difference.

Get the latest Dell customised DVD ISO from http://linux.dell.com/wiki/index.php/Ubuntu_7.10 (warning, it's 4.3gb for some reason!)

I haven't given it a go on mine yet, but stock standard Ubuntu 7.10 32 bit seems to go alright :)

Most distros should work fine if you know how to get the hardware working. Forums and wikis for distros usually have entries for Dell notebooks to help you out. I'm going to install Gentoo x86_x64 on mine when I get it. (not recommended for people new to linux)
