My dad told me the best time to buy a Dell laptop is in August. Is that true? He said that's when they will have the best savings. I'm considering getting the Inspiron 600m. It's just hard to wait when I see all the savings right now such as a free wireless card upgrade and a $35 upgrade for an all-in-one printer.

Whenever you get one, be sure to use one of the coupons like $750 off or 35% off. Those will save you a lot compared to whatever deals they have at the moment such as free wireless upgrade and printer which combined is worth about $60.

However, if you get a coupon and like the upgrades then it's a good time to buy one. You save an additional $60 on top of the $750 or 35%.

They'll likely have an August back to school sale which I doubt will have better $$$ off than the coupons. But in a month, prices of hardware in general might be going down. That's the only thing IMO that you should look for, hardware base prices going down. Otherwise, coupons are the biggest savings by far than what they advertise on the website. Little free things like the wireless card or nice too but not that big a factor.

Thanks for the advice! That really helps. Also, what widescreen laptops are good? I was considering them, but I was worried about extra bulk. I need a portable laptop.

The 6000 is a good option for school. It's a little bulky compared to a 600M but will probably be fine for taking to class and what not. Also, it gives you some options that will make it better suited for using as a DVD player as well.

I dont know if there is a best time to buy a laptop. Myself I think there are two primetimes to buy any computer, a fully packages ready to go one. May-June, August-September, also a good deal may be found at Xmas.

Dell puts out coupons quite regularly on the Home side of things. But I would recommend buying from Small Business, USA tech support, Sometimes better deals.

Also if you are looking at a Latitude or Precision dont expect coupons.

If you're looking for portability, the 700m has a wide, glossy-type screen that is among hte best on the market. It is , however, 12.1" , so it may cause problems for some (resolution 1280x800 I believe)

If you don't care much about portability, the 6000 is an awesome choice. Or better yet, if you want more power, the 9300. The Lattitude line is built with more rugedness, so you might want to check those out, but as it's been said, don't expect to find a better deal on one of those machiens than on an Inspiron.

Refurbished systems are not a bad choice if you want to save... alot of the machines are returned not because of technical defects but because the people who buy them dont like the financing or whatever else. I bought the 600M my wife has for 700$ flat/shipped through the refurbished site.

The 700m in my opinion isnt the greatest choice, for me the screen was terrible, I just couldnt get comfortable working on something that small and in that aspect. If you're looking for performance go for the 6k (it's alot bigger though) but for portability and just enough power i'd get the 600m, I actually think it's their best selling system overall.

YOu get used to the size quickly. I agree with you about the 600m : it is the most sold laptop, that's why it's been around for so long.

Something else to consider...Dell is going to release a new line of Desktops and Laptops in the second half of the year. They are supposed to be higher end models and will be fairly expensive ($1200 to 3500), so if that happens, I would look for the Inspiron prices to drop.
