i've had my laptop for about 5 months now and on random occasions i'd get blue screens of death, but never thought anything of it. about 2 weeks ago i started getting blue screens of death on startup which i had never gotten before.
however for the past 2 days i haven't been able to get my laptop to boot up without crashing. i get a blue screen of death every time i try to turn on my computer normally and i can only use the computer if i boot into safe mode.
the blue screen says PAGE_FAULT_IN_NONPAGED_AREA and the stop error is 0x00000050 (0xE3179000, 0x00000000, 0x85B83CEA, 0x00000001)
so basically, i'll turn it on, windows will start to load but then it blue screens. i think the error is caused by a software problem, but i have no idea what could be causing this.
please help, i really want to be able to use my laptop again

Can you boot into Safe Mode?
-
yeah i can, my laptop is actually on in safemode right next to me. i looked in the event logs and it seems as if most of the errors are coming from the trend micro security center, but i have no idea why.
do you think that if i remove the security center it will fix the problem? -
Can't hurt to try.
-
ok, thanks. i'll try to remove it and we'll see what happens.
-
ok, if you can boot in safe mode you are doing fairly good,
make sure your files are ok,
once you boot in safe mode
open windows explorer
right click on C:\ (or your system boot drive likely C:\)
click properties
then click on the 'tools' tab
where it say's error checking(first one) click 'check now'
when a dialog box comes up with 2 options check both of them
because you are checking all of your harddrive including windows, you will have to restart your computer. (do it)
everthing else is done by the computer. it could take a little while so just walk away for a little while.
if there is still the same problem try using system restore
Start > All Programs > Accessories > System Tools > System Restore.
Note# select a date that is before any of the BSOD(blue screen of death)
System restore usually works on just about anything, so ideal could be using your computer in a few minutes.
good luck, i hope it works out for you! -
Try these links http://www.pcstats.com/articleview.cfm?articleID=1647
And this one http://www.freedownloadtools.com
Hope this helps. -
yuio - i'll try the error checking thing, but i already tried using system restore and it didn't help with anything, the blue screens are still there. :/
reezin - i've seen the first link before, but it still helped me a little bit. the second link looks like it could be spyware or a virus so i'm not going to download it. besides, i'm not even typing using my laptop right now.
thanks for the help everybody, this forum is great. -
If you read down it says 100% garunteed not to be spyware, trojans ect... You could always scan it.But the choice is yours.Hope you get the problem corrected.
-
o, well i didn't look all the way down. lol. thanks for hoping the problem gets fixed, i do too.
i'm running the error checking scan right now so i'll post what the results are when it's all done. -
ok, well the error checking finished, but i think it crashed. i wasn't in the room when it finished but when i came back it displayed the screen it normally has after it crashes. so i started windows normally, but the scan is going again so hopefully i'll see what happens this time if it crashes.
-
ok, sorry for the triple post, but the error checking finished. my laptop FINALLY booted up to the desktop for the first time in 2 days.
i don't know if the problem is completely fixed because i haven't restarted the computer yet to see if it's just a one time thing or not, but thanks for all the help guys.
if anything else happens i'll keep you posted but hopefully it's all fixed. -
well...i've got bad news. my computer is still crashing and again i can't boot to the desktop without using safe mode. i'm running another error check right now so we'll see if that fixes the problem or not.
if anyone has any other ideas of how to fix this i'd like to know them. -
Error 0x00000050, occurs when requested data is not found in memory. Or the missing data is identified as being located within an area of memory that cannot be read to disk. Reasons could be: hardware faults, certain faulty services, antivirus programs, Trojans, rootkits and corrupt volume.
You have already run error checking, hardware analysis and restore. And have found no errors. Perhaps, you can try the above in a different way (like a repetition). Run Chkdsk /f /r. You can also the recovery console and run Chkdsk /r
There is no harm in trying.
Have you installed any programs or services lately? It could be a rootkit or a trojan. I don’t know if it’s possible in Safe Mode, but try running some rootkit revealer or removal programs. Also, to be sure your memory is okay, try using some more memory/hardware diagnostics programs.
These are just my thoghts, I am not sure if the system allows you to run these tools in safe mode.

ok, thanks for the suggestions bgeo. i ran another error check this morning and i was able to get my computer to work, but then it crashed again. i uninstalled all the programs i installed near the time the crashes starting, but i haven't restarted my computer to see if that fixed the problem.
if my laptop did have a rootkit or a trojan, is there anyway that i would be able to find out simply by running a virus scan? i ran one on saturday and didn't find any errors or viruses.
if the error is an antivirus program, would the problem be solved simply by removing the faulty program?
thanks for the help guys. -
does no one else have any suggestions?
-
What pgm do you use for your anti-virus protection ?
Did you check your system's memory ?
BGeo -
i use avg for anti-virus, but i also have that trend-micro security system that my computer came with. ihaven't checked the ram yet because i can't find the right sized screw driver for it so i'm gonna ask my friend to let me borrow one.
i don't think i'm gonna be able to run msconfig because right now i can't even boot into safe mode, the computer just freezes up whenever it tries to boot into it. -
Can you try booting form CD ? You can then attempt to reinstall/repair and see if that resolves the problem (do not reformat, it will erase your important files). But make sure you have a backup copy of your important files and documents in your exisitng profile. You can do this using a boot disk.
BGeo -
Have you tried reformating it,hopefully your backed up.

As bgeo stated it could be faulty hardware, including ram, video,or L2 cache.I remembered seeing an article outlining BSOD and what you might do to fix it.So try looking at the (if you can) Event Viewer. Go to Run type eventvwr.msc.On left hand side highlight either apps or system icon.On right hand side there will be three different events labeled information, warning,or error. They're sorted by time in which they occured.Scoll to the time of last system restart and double click the events. This will bring up the properties window detailing information that should give you a clue on any problems. The top portion outlines the date and time the event occured, the source of the error ant event ID number.Underneath is a link to MS help and support center. You may have done this already but try googling the event ID,another website I found from reading is www.eventid.netI don't know if this will solve your problems but it could be a start.

thanks for the responses guys. i don't have my windows cds, but one of my friends has an extra copy he's gonna let me use. he's gonna come over tomorrow and try to help me boot up my computer. i'll respond with my findings as soon as i can.
oh, and reezin i have already looked in the event viewer, but i looked at it a little bit differently than you did. the last time i booted into safe mode i checked the event viewer. one of the errors had a list of drivers or something that malfunctioned. i wrote them down, but i don't have time to type them all out right now. -
BGeo -
i haven't had the chance to uninstall trend micro, but i'm going to as soon as i can. hopefully with the OS CD i'll be able to get my computer to work at least temporarily while i try to figure out the true cause of the problem.
if it happens to be a memory problem, should i just take out one stick of ram and see if that fixes it and place it in a different slot? when i get a chance later today i'll type out the list i talked about earlier. -
ok, well i haven't had a chance to try and use the recovery cd yet, but i was able to check my computers ram. however, the the computer still crashes and i still can't boot into safe mode.
whenever i try to boot into safe mode the computer freezes when it tries to load windows\system32\drivers\mup.sys. does anyone now what this is? -
Try the following:
Go to BIOS and try setting it to default.
or
Try hitting F8 to invoke "last known good configuration".
Perhaps one of above would help.
If the above does not help, try "disable MUP" at recovery console. If mup.sys is the real problem, it will boot or else the loading will proceed to the next file and freeze again. Let's see what happens.
