burner now working at very slow speeds

I have a dell E1505 core 2 duo machine, with 4 gigs of ram in it. I purchased this machine about 2 years ago. The dvd burner installed in the machine is a sdvd8820 phillips drive. the drive used to work fine before. as of late, the read speads and burn speeds have been terrible. I dont use this as my main burner, however when i tried to burn an image today, it burned at less that 1x. I checked the Primary and Secondary controllers to make sure they were on DMA and they were. Does anyone have any suggestions as to why this drive stopped working properly? Does this mean it is just time to purchase a new drive?
