I've noticed ebay sells 60 gig Hard drives for inspirons for fifty bucks. Hard drives easily slide in and out of the notebook. very painless procedure. Anyone doing this? I do a lot of video and in some ways this makes more sense than an external hd.

The main HDD is never how swap. And it's not easy either.Check and see whether it voids the warranty or not (I might have either seals or marked screws so they'll know whether you have opened it or not)

I did it last night it takes about 90 seconds. I had to pull it out on account of my six year old who spilled soda all over it. It's really easy to do.

I think it's better to get a bigger HDD,
Just make sure what kind of HDD does your laptop have ? (PATA,SATA and the exact version).
What exactly are you planning to do with it?
You cannot remove the HDD while the laptop is on obviously. You'll need one of these small 2.5" HDD enclosures.

The hard drives are a snap to swap, and no, it will not void the warranty. I dont think the OP is planning on HOT swapping the drives, and no you shouldnt attempt that.

Still, you'll need to keep a separate os installation on each drive, unless you have two drive slots...

Why? If he only uses the drives on that computer, he could legally make a backup image and load it on the other drives, I do it for my desktop as well as my laptop, that way if a drive fails, its simply a matter of installing my backup drive and I'm up and running without skipping a beat.

The thing is, these second hard drives are just so cheap on ebay, it's hard not to consider it, esp in my case cuz I always deal with huge video files.
