I'd suggest at least a 2-3 year warranty.
as for prices, no one can say it better thant the dell website.

they give a list to choose from when you go to configure your laptop.

If you are purchasing with your credit card, maybe check with them about warranties. American Express and MasterCard seem to have pretty good plans.

I have a MasterCard through Chase and their policy is they will extend a warranty on a latop up to 1 year at no extra cost. So you get a 1 year though the manufacturer, they will double it, you get a two year through the manufacturer, they will extend it to 3 years. The extended warranty covers the same as the manufacturers warranty, except during the extended warranty period you contact your credit card company to initiate the repair.
