I just got a new Dell e1405. Works great, but I'm a little worried about a low, annoying buzzing sound that occurs when the fan turns on.

I think there's two(?) fans, one seems to run most of the time when it's on, the other turns on as needed. Its the latter fan that makes the noise. When the second fan isn't on, the laptop is whisper quiet. When it turns on, there's the low annoying noise.

Is there some break-in period, after which it will go away? Anyone have any experience with this?

Unfortunately, the sound is required. Notebooks have to cool down when they heat up. Hopefully it's not too obnoxious.

Fan noise can come from two things generally.

First off, there is just the fan being on noise. Should not be very noticeable. With my E1505 and T7200 I never notice the fans at all.

A fan could buzz if it's just not seated correctly, or secure enough, or hitting up against something when in operation.

If the bearings are faulty you may get some noise from that. The fan is pretty much either defective, or worn out.

All laptop fans make that noise just that some laptop designs hide it better than others
