as per title, I noticed that my m1530 notebook emits a high pitched but low magnitude (sound level) whine which is audible when working alone with hardly any ambient noise now this sound is freaking annoying, do any of you 1530 owners get this? ive searched around and it seems a common problem in all notebooks as well as the 1330 too which the 1530 is derived from.
If it is a common problem then i might keep it and live with it or maybe return it permanently since reading these forums im pessimistic of exchanging it in fear of receiving a machine with the same or more problems.

It is quite common but not all of them do it.
It is can be caused in several different ways but is usually attributed to either cpu whine, southbridge whine, or a combination of the two!
Only option is to exchange it and hope the new one doesnt suffer from it. Unfortunately it is an apparent problem with the particular intel chipset that is used. -
Yes, mine does make a high pitch noise...I just called dell tech support to get a replacement, but I'm not going to keep my hopes up...Just going through a necessary process to see if anything changes.
I heard that Apple owned up (however passively) to the high pitch noise issue, and they replaced their mobo to a new revision that fixes the noise. I can't recall any other company that has directly dealt with the problem. I think Dell put up some lame "workaround" to the issue, only to decrease batter life if you're not always going to be plugged into the power supply (which for laptop use is not that likely or practical anyway).
Dell REALLY needs to adress this issue HEAD ON, with a hardware solution...not cheap software tricks that compromises battery life. -
Just to emphasize the fact that out of all my three computers that I received from Dell (XPS 1330) all of them give off a high pitched noise. I just contacted Dell and they are very hopefull that they can replace a part to fix the problem. They said the cause is due to " an imbalance on one of the internal components, the system board has been revised to alleviate this problem." So hopefully it works. I just thought I would let anyone know to contact them as opposed to attempting to fix it themselves! If not I would suggest returning it bc it is extremely irritating!

DOUBLE POST! DOUBLE POST BY Tom Braider!!!!
He must be extremely irritated! -
My Asus A6Ja used to whine a lot, especially when running on battery and it would alternate somewhat when opening/closing windows and using a mouse.
I can't say I've noticed my M1530 doing it but it is still early days. -
Meh, my replacement unit had the same faint whine as my original, and also had even louder LCD whine, where it would make noise for all but the highest brightness level. At that point I realized that maybe I was being unrealistic in my expectations. I have a feeling that most, if not all, units have the faint whine, but not everyone can hear it. I returned my replacement and kept the original.
I'm not gonna be hung over this issue anymore. -
Are you talking about my laptop or my wife?!?!

I have the same high pitch noise. First I thought I must be getting tumor or something. But I wont be getting a replacement and not in a hurry as well after getting the LG screen installed. This could be just a hardware layout problem. If Dell has a fix on this with instructions on where the noise is coming from I open mine up. Instruction manuals are already posted on their site just need to know where the possible hardware noise is coming from, which component.
Anyway it comes and go but it can be irritating at times.
calling all xps m1530 owners does yours make a high pitched whining noise?
