    can keeping a laptop plugged in keep the cmos battery charged

    I have a six year old inspiron 8100 notebook that i think the cmos battery is gone or going. If the notebook is kept plugged into a 110 outlet even when the notebook is off will it keep the cmos battery charged. Can the notebook continue to be booted up when the cmos battery is dead.

    The CMOS battery only keeps track of time and custom BIOS settings. It's not rechargeable, so when it starts going dead, if you notice the time or your BIOS settings reset, that's why. When the system is powered on, the battery isn't used.
    Of course you can keep booting up your system, you just may have to keep setting the time and date. :p
    Just go to a local electronics store and get a replacement. :)

    Yeah its usually just a standard watch type battery in there should only cost a few bucks from a battery store

    Actually it's shaped like a watch battery but it's a bigger version. Watch batteries are TINY, but these things are about the size of your thumbnails (but thicker). ;)
