It sounds like you are trying to switch from your laptop display to a external display. If the cable is conected and the source is capable then pressing the "Fn + ??" where ?? is equal to the F# key that has the CRT/LCD in little letters is. On my laptop it is Fn + F8.

Do you have the TV set to accept input from the s-video cable?

Find a button on the TV, or on the TV remote, that says input. On the TV, not on the computer. Keep pressing the button until it scrolls to s-video. It should scroll thru all the ports on the tv like hdmi-1 hdmi-2 video-1 video-2 etc.

on my TV the s-video and video-1 are the same.

Just try scrolling thru all of the inputs and see if one of them works.

Once you have the tv set to accept video from the s video cable, you may also need to do one or a combination of the following.

    reboot the computer

find the fn key on the computer that toggles between Display on only the computer, display on only the tv, and display on both monitor and tv. rjfrench said it is the fn+f8 on his computer. It is the fn+f4 on my gateway and hp.

If you can not find the proper fn key, you can try going to control panel > display> settings
