ok, i know am thinking too far ahead. but can it be done? i have a 8400gs and I know it will not be good enough to play games released next your or even 2nd half of 2008 and I want to put off buying a desktop for as long as possible. my vostro definiately have gaming potential since the C2D is fast and ram can be easily upgraded

Nop... sorry to say.. but you CANNOT change graphics card of a laptop.. The graphics card are wlded to the motherboard and thats why it cannot be interchangable..

SOME GPUs can be changed. Dell is one of the few laptop maker to use changeable cards (but not all). Since you card is dedicated and not integrated it should not be welded to the mother board. However you can only pretty much change it for another GPU that is available for this laptop. Don't get your hopes up by looking at a GeForce 8800M.

According to the Dell website you currently have the highest GPU available for the Vostro 1400. This means that you pretty much don't have any hopes of getting a batter GPU in there.
