I just got my laptop and try to reinstall the OS. However, everytime I go to the "press any key to boot from the cd", I end up with a screen stating that there is a general protection fault. Please help me.

Not cool.
Are you using the RAM the laptop came with? Or did you add aftermarket ram? -
The ram that came with the computer.
-
Does the laptop still boot with the OG OS?
-
Yes, I am using the computer right now.
-
Has the CD/DVD ever been used for a success reformat before?
Any visible scratches or weirdness on the surface? -
sign; I see a weird and unremoveable mark in the side of the disc. I guess that the problem. I will have to call dell. Before calling, is there any other good tips on how to do a os repair now? Thanks.

What happens when you are booted in the OS and insert the CD/DVD?
Does the autoplay Windows thing open up?
There are some options there, although, what if it's in the middle of the repair and it gets snagged, you might get extra hosed.
Why the urgency? Is something way out of whack? -
I want to start off a clean start, ie gettinng rid of the junkware.
I follow the steps on this forum. Only to the point where I get the message:
"press any key to boot from disc"
When I press said key, the system goes to a screen (not blue) saying there is a protection general fault. -
did you go to the 1 time boot menu from a reboot, or did you insert the XP disc while in XP, and select the Format option?
-
1 time boot.
can't seen to reinstall the OS
