I just recently got my vostro 1500 with a 8600gt. I can OC the core but when I try to move the memory up just a little I get a crash and an direct 3d error, and vista tells me the component failed. I need to restart to get full performace back from the GPU, if I try a run of 3dmark06 after the crash to desktop I only manage 6fps.

What could be causing this? I have managed a core of 600mhz and stock 400 memory. I am using 169.01 drivers I tried it on the stock dell drivers too and there is no difference. Could I have a bad card?

I've read memory clock on 8 series GPUs are very limited. I doubt the card itself is bad.
