For some odd reason, whenever I try to install a new video card driver using the setup file, it keeps saying I am not using Vista 32 bit and cannot continue. I've tried doing it manually and just choosing the driver from device manager and uninstalling the old driver, but it just says my current driver is up to date (even when I'm trying to upgrade it from the standard VGA to 8600GT one) or that I'm not running Vista 32 bit.
The reason I am trying to reinstall my driver is because the TV will not show my laptop's display through the S-video cable (it did before I reinstalled Vista), so I figured it was a driver problem.
Anyone have any ideas?

You have to use standard video card drivers with a modified .inf because nvidia doesn't have any driver updates for it's newer mobile cards.
get them here

Yes, you might have problems with that. My laptop wouldn't resume from sleep or hibernate after I updated the drivers, I ended up having to roll them back.
cannot install new video card drivers
