your clock speed changes on the fly depending on usage. when it needs to ramp up speed, it will. the transition is transparent to the user.

Just set the Power scheme to "Always On" which will force the processor to run at full speed.

And, I want to go for an external hard disk.

    1. my 60gb in the system is 5400 rpm. Will it be foolish to go for an external 7200?

    2. Which will give me faster transfers, USB or Firewire?

you can also try the software centrino hardware control i think it is now changed to notebook hardware control. so either way search it up google and you'll be able to set your centrino to full power on either on battery or plugged in. :p

i think usb2.0 is a little bit faster. i suggest you go with 2.0 instead of firewire. first it is utmost popular cuz of the usb slots so you can give the hard drive to anyone if you want to copy out files and stuff. they also work with 1.0 slots so might as well go for that.

not everyone has a firewire port so yea. and usb cables are cheap compared to firewire.

Firewire is a bit more expensive, but I think it will be worth it. Although USB has a slightly higher maximum transfer rate, Firewire has a higher sustained transfer rate. I'd recommend it if you are going to be transferring large files often.

But, if you are just occasionally transferring files, I don't think you'd notice a difference between USB 2.0 and Firewire. If USB is that much cheaper, then get that. ;)

USB 2.0 is the way to go. It is very fast. You do not gain anything from Firewire. It just costs you more.
