I guess a better question is if I buy a refurbished with a 1.6 cpu, how can I know if I can go to the santa rosa models?

    Look here: http://forum.notebookreview.com/showthread.php?t=166906

I recently bought a refurbished Dell Vostro 1500 for $650 (including tax) with the C2D T5470 (P socket). Plan to swap out the T5470 with something like T7500 down the road since they both have the same socket.

I've replaced a few Dell CPUs over the years; they've all been pretty easy swaps, so I wouldn't be too worried. Just remember to replace the thermal paste and stuff like that.

I was thinking the same think. Buy a cheap vostro 1500 and replace the cpu.
Again, how can I know it will support a Santa Rosa cpu?

If it comes with a Santa Rosa CPU it will support a Santa Rosa CPU.

Only limitations you'll have to upgrading the CPU is bios support. But I can bet chances are, someone will wanna put a quad or some other unsupported processor in one of the named models one day down the road, and write a hack to let the bios accept it.

The BIOS may take it all good and well, but if it won't fit into the pins...good luck.

Well, obviously it wouldn't come with santa rosa if it is a 1.6 ghz (I don't think). Doesn't the Santa Rosa chips use a different chipset then the non- santa rosa cpus?

Santa Rosa uses socket P, if that's what you're asking.

When the quads go mobile my guess is intel will still be on santa rosa, and dell will probably support with with a bios update for the 1520/1500.

I'm expecting the same, although, manufactures really put the moves on making the BIOS pretty locked down. But as I said, if Dell refuse, people will hack it. lol

I'm looking forward to getting that 2.0ghz quad core with 12mb cache.. maybe the 2.4ghz..$500 starting price is pricey though!

i'd be much happier with the 2.6ghz 6M penryn next year. i certainly don't need a quad personally. i'll take a faster dual any day.
