I've had my E1705 for about a year now and the palm area (the two areas beside the touchpad) is getting a little dirty. I was wondering what do you guys recommend to clean it. If i use the wrong chemicals, i'm afraid the silver paint would fall off. So any suggestions- like windex or something?

windex should work fine. you dont need a harsh cleaning solution, just somethin enough to get through the dirt.

We use the Magic Eraser for the MacBook, which is notorious for picking up dirt. It works well, and returns the MacBook (surprisingly) to like-new white.

The are no chemicals that "eat" the plastic, but try it first on a small uconspicuous portion - you never know how plastics differ from one manufacturer to the other.

Ummm, you def do NOT want to spray windex on your laptop. I really don't know why some ppl post rediculous stuff like that :(

The reason why I mentioned the screen cleaner is because it works well for cleaning the rest of the laptop. I thought I was pretty clear on that, but w/e -- do what you want.....

I forgot to add that in most cases, ie notebooks that are not white, a slightly damp towel will do the trick.

There really shouldn't be much dirt to remove, anyway.

I've been using Mr. Clean multi surface cleaner for about a year on my laptops for everything except the screen, takes off quite a bit of dirt and hasn't worn down any of the keys or surface area of the laptop.

I generally use a paper towel and a dab of regular old rubbing alcohol. Try to stay away from water.

Well, granted there's no paint... but none of my notebooks have had a painted surface.

windex used on the plastic portions is fine, which is all he is concerned about right now.

Well the problem is i haven't cleaned it on a regular basis. So that's why i see a black spot at the palm areas. I don't really want to go out and buy a specific product to clean it, just some normal household items. That's why i was asking if it was safe to use windex and i will try that later. Any more clever ideas?

Car Interior detail wipes work great on electronics. Most are even safe for lcd screens( Not the ones with shine or protectant). If you have any in the garage. Even baby wipes will work! Lysol disinfecting wipes. Ummmm....yeah, I think you got the idea.

Personally, I wouldn't use *ANY* product containing ammonia on my notebook anywhere.

i have pretty much used windex to clean entire laptops, minus screen, without ever having a problem. it gets the keys and plastic parts nice and clean without damaging the paint. but to each his own.

I pretty much use rubbing alcohol to clean everything, it does a good job and it dries safely.
