When I set the computer to do notthing when I close the lid it squished all my desktop shortcuts to the top left corner. XPS support line couldn't figure out how to deal with this. I think it changes the resolution when I close the lid and that's why all my icons gets all crammed to the top left. Anyone konw how to fix this?
-
Odd... I've never heard of that before. I'm still trying to find a way just to turn off the screen without shutting down...
-
Indeed very odd. Hm, there might be a program inside your computer causing that, did you do a fresh clean install of XP or you jsut leave it as it is?

Think its a tab there if I was not mistaken that says "On close lid" which you change from stand by to "Do Nothing"
Surprised you dont know that...?
That was the FIRST thing I did on mine since I always close my lid if I will be afk or something, just to prevent things.. never like it in standby, I even disable hibernation mode. -

Try upgrading the Bios and GFX driver from dell.. I had to do that on my week old E1505 new bios said it was for supporting the ATI chip and the ATI driver was to fix some formatting issues etc.
-
Same problem here on my Precision M90. I seems to me to be more a Windows bug than a driver problem, and it's really annoying.
-
Well, not really, If it is a windows bug, then more, WAY more, people complain about it. I am not one of them. I have no problem with it at all.

Maybe, but what ever it is, it's a problem with 17" screens. Does anyone with a 15.4" screen have this problem?
-
my e1505 has no problems

Anyway, back to the original post.
I think I MIGHT have a solution for you. Try disabling any and all nVidia nView settings or nVidia desktop applications. The nVidia software is the only tie to your GUI I can think of that would cause an issue like that... I'm out of ideas if that doesn't work. -
ok ... I don't know what happened but something made it fix half the problem. Before it use to cram all my shortuts into top left corner so it moves shortcuts vertically up and horizontally left. Now it only moves horizontally left. I'm so confused ... I tried disabling all the features in nView and enable one feature by one to see the problem but don't find anything ...

@ Nick.. thats odd.... laptops are supposed to know when the lid is closed and shut the screen off... if it doesnt may suggest a defect.
@ xelaeel right click anywhere on the desktop, then scroll to "Arrange icons by" Uncheck "Auto Arrange" and "Align to grid"
See if that fixes it. Its possible that when you shut your lid or so, it resyncs the desktop and thus auto arranges it. -
I don't have auto arrange on since I like to keep two columns of shortcuts one at the right and one at the left (program and game shortcuts at its side). I unchecked align to grid and same problem. Could it be something with the driver? I uninstalled the driver and used the xp driver, the screen didn't even close when I close the lid, but at least it didn't change resolution.

Found a cure. It has to do with the driver. I went into adminstrative tool --> service and disabled NVIDIA display driver service. Description says it provides system and desktop level support to the NVIDIA display driver. Set it to manual and problem gone. The only drawback is that screen no longer shut off after I close the lid. But at least I can close the lid now.

Ah... sucks that screen dont shut off... guess its a mixed blessing if you order a 1705 or 1505 Each has its ups and downs, but I am happy with my 1505 ^^
Plays SSF sega saturn just fine. =D -
I guess I've found a solution: Log into the BIOS. Go to the Video section and turn of LCD Panel Expansion.
Hope that helps,

I did extensive research on this back at Notebook Forums since I got tired of the problems. What I found was that any driver other than the stock Dell ones do not trigger the LCD to shut off when closed. The Dell drivers are modded nvidia drivers made for the notebooks, so they have that feature built in. The popular laptopvideo2go, XtremeG, and Omega drivers are modded nvidia desktop drivers made to work with the mobile cards; so they don't have this feature. I tried around 20 drivers including the 2 latest Dell stock drivers and a mix of the newest drivers at the time from LV2G, TweaksRUs, and Omega, but the only drivers that I got to work correctly were the Dell ones. However, one issue that is to be noted is that with the newest Dell driver when you close the lid it puts the resolution down very low before turning the LCD off, so if your icons are set to auto-arrange they will all clump up into the top left corner when you open the screen back. The resolution will go back to what you had it, but the icons will stay clumped together. I haven't been able to figure out why it does that, I think it's a bug in the driver.
If you are using the stock Dell drivers, and you are still having problems with the LCD not turning off, chances are that you have a program running that is causing it to malfunction, or the magentic read switch in the palmrest is defective.
I should also add that I have no experience with ATI drivers, so I can't comment on any systems with an ATI card. -
! Thanks for the info, but did you even try my solution? It works here on my M90 and the LCD is set to turn off.
When you turn of the LCD Panel Expansion, it doesn't move or expand anything anymore after a change in resolution. So the Dell and Windows LOGOs will be shown much smaller but it solves the problem with the moving icons on the desktop. -
mine just takes a second or 2 too boot up i am assuming it shuts off te video card when u close the lid for power reason ..
