hey everyone im think of buyin a new dell e1705 laptop with duo core 2 at 2.0ghz. im dinking of budnling it with the nvidia 7900s cause i want it for gaming. MY QUESTION IS...is it worth spending 100$ for a 2 gig RAM stick that goes at 667 mhz or save 100$ and buyin the 2 gig RAm w/ 533 mhz? I MEAN HOW MUCH FASTER ARE THEY? also if is worth spenidn another 100$ to upgrade from 80 gig drive at 5400 rpm to 7200 rpm? again i want it for gaming but im not an avid gamer, prob say intermediate...suggestion wouls be good THXX :ddd

Get 2gb of RAM regardless. Also, if your a gamer, get a bigger hard drive. Games are getting bigger and an 80gb hard drive will fill up really quick.

Just save yourself $100 and get the 533MHZ memory there is definitely not a $100 difference between the two, I wouldn't pay $10 more for the 667MHZ.
You won't notice any significant improvement with 667MHZ over the 533MHZ.
The hard drive will have more bearing on the performance of the system so thats up to you but it won't drastically improve the performance either. The 5400RPM is just fine for gaming however you will notice alittle speed increase with the 7200RPM drive. -
667MHz ram is not worth $100. Because they have a higher latency than 533MHz RAM, meaning that the overall speed improvement is negligible because higher clock speed gain is canceled out by higher latency.
I recommend buying ram elsewhere. You have to pay close to $185 to upgrade to 2GB (from 1GB) at DELL. But you can easily buy 2GB (2x1GB) 667MHz for that amount from newegg or some other place. Then you can sell your preinstalled 1GB to save even more!.
Same goes for the HDD; you can buy a 7200RPM 100GB disk for around $120 from newegg while keeping your DELL preinstalled HDD; you can use it as an external storage unit or sell it.
Upgrading RAM and Hard Disk does not void warranty; you can safely and easily do it your self. Refer the online service manual for instructions. -
i heard that for laptops, once u choose a gfzx card, u can't change it or it very hard to change for a new one is that tru? also thx for the service manual link man, it seems ez enuff to do but im still a noob and do not want to dmg a new comp. i have one last question say i install a new hardrive or ram, do i need to install any drivers for them or will the comp recognize the update by itself?

Technically you can chamge it IF you start with dedicated graphics, though its seldom ever a practical matter. You can only use dell branded cards that were made available for your model only, they are hard to find and very expensive. The 7900 GS is more than likely the highest card they will use with E1705, so its more or less a total non issue.

get the 533mhz. the diffrence is not that big -
2.) RAM is incredibly easy to install, the hard drive is not too bad either.
3.) RAM/HD will not require drivers, but you will need to move your data onto the new hard drive if you upgrade.
A faster hard drive will not affect in game performance, but will decrease loading time.Last edited by a moderator: Jan 29, 2015 -
thx lots guys this will rely help me mak emy decision...but i have just a fews lsat questions to ask:
1) is it worth it to upgrade to truelife (glossy)? i mean how much imroved is pictuer qualtiy from normal.
2) is ir worth ti to upgrade from 6 cell to 9 cell battery jus in case im eva on road? i mean how much longer do they last?
3) also if i decide to buy a laptop hardrive from newegg will it fit my dell? does each laptop have a specfic harddrive size or is it al the same? if they are all dfferent then i wil do some more research.
ok thx lots for help guys -

1) glossy is personal preference, I suggest going to a sotre and looking at them in person, though most stores I've been to lately only have glossy laptop screens on display, though if you look at the flat panel lcd's, they usually have a matte finish, so you can compare that way. If you want the high resolution screen, you have to go glossy.
2) the 9 cell will give you a good bit more time, typically about two hours or more depending on usage. If you intend to game at all on battery you'll want the 9cell, gaming at full power drains a lot of juice in a short amount of time.
3) You will need a 2.5" hard drive with an SATA interface.
