So I've bene playing a game (tf2) on my laptop, and 3 times now its turned off, just straight up turned off, and so I turned it back on, and then the keyboard didn't work no matter what I did.

So I called dell and they said some sort of static built up in the keyboard, and to take out battery, and wall plug, and hold power for 15 seconds, and then turn comp on. I did that and it restored my keyboard to full use.

But now twice since then my comp has shut down, and I've had to use that technique to restore it...

This laptop is only 2 weeks old, ? Why is it having problems a mere 2 weeks after I got it.

Does anyone know what the real problem is?

I mean I'm not even typeing fast enough to make a static charge, in game you only use a couple buttons. Also i'm on tile floors, no carpet at all, I use my laptop on a table although it does get hot.

Any help. Plz let me know.

I'd go back to Dell and tell them it's not acceptable that this has happened so many times. Put them in the awkward position by asking them why it is doing this - see what they come back with.

Maybe there's a short somewhere? If it's happening consistently you need to get a replacement, ASAP.

I meant a short inside the machine, likely somewhere on the motherboard - well outside your control. A replacement is likely the only way this will get resolved.

Yes this was my thought also; best bet is like we've said, get Dell to replace.

the software on it should not matter. Your product is physically defective. Reinstall Vista and give them a call again.

Yes Windows 7 will not matter. How the heck is Windows 7 going to cause a static build up - ask them. I'd love to hear their reply.

Well of course the software doesn't matter, but that is how the warranty works. I've heard the same crap from Dell many times. If you don't have the original OS installed then Dell has the right to tell you they can't do anything. It's their policy: having an OS that differs from the pre-installed OS, could in fact cause a severe hardware failure. :p

How could having Windows 7 cause a failure that Vista doesn't cause?

I could understand it a little more if you were talking about installing Vista on a Mac, but Vista > 7?

Re-install Vista and tell them it was happening even before you installed Windows 7 anyway.

Who knows. Dell is full of it sometimes. That is exactly what I would do, just tell them you had the problem prior to installing Windows 7. The warranty is on the hardware anyways, what software is installed should make no difference.

They may refuse to give a refund because they cannot troubleshoot as they're likely not trained for 7 yet.

Yes that's right, they might. Which is why I strongly suggest going back to them and saying the problem was happening in Vista also, so you tried Windows 7 to see if it was a problem with the software.

or just don't bother. the likelihood that you'll get the same person is extremely low, and it's also fairly unlikely that they will have updated the file. Just reinstall and call them.

Yeah thats what I've done, I talked to a manager too, at least if this problem continues after the 21 day money back return I can still return it... (day 19 now)

Problem is that I really badly want a laptop and this was a good deal... Oh well if the problem continues even tho I have vista (shouldnt' be hard to tell because its occured 4 times in the last day), then I'll tell them either I need a replacement or I'll just return it. I'm not gonna play the tech support game like I did with my last dell, where I had to call them twice a month to fix my computer.

edit, and yeah thats exactly what they said, that they weren't supporting win7 yet, and they couldn't help me... They did offer to transfer me to their software support which would have charged me just for talking... haha yeah right.

That's understandable if you called them when you still had 7 installed, but if they didn't when you had vista installed, that's extremely odd. They have to fix the problem some how, and most likely a replacement is the only fix.

so then problem solved? lol. I think if you called them and said it was happening anyway they'd send out the replacement. Dunno how they could troubleshoot for that.
