How much of a difference will there be?

Also something else I was thinking of is USB 3.0 Isn't it suppose to start coming out next year?

No - talking about the new chipset due out in the summer, Montevina, which takes over from the Crestline GM/PM965. Support for DDR 800 amongst other changes.

If you think about Dell's previous upgrade record, their Inspiron E1505, 1705s etc, had been out long past their lifespans. Dell is probably sitting comfortably at the top and waiting for much longer before they come up with something for Montevina.

when I talked to Dell re Bluetooth 2.1, they said they were pretty conservative with new changes. Considering the XPS models are pretty brand new and they've just ironed out production problems, I wouldn't necessarily say we get a whole new lineup JUST yet...

Theres no way Dell will not be offering Montevina when it's released and I doubt there will be a simple refresh with a new board for the current models.

I think they will be released sometime in late September so that they are after the big back to school laptop buying rush.

I think they'll just change the motherboards and the chassis will remain the same, just like the release of the new generation penryn processors..the current chassis is a hit..I don't think we'll see a new chassis in less than a year of the release of the actual xps line..the actual line was released in december..we'll perhaps have to wait till next year to see a refresh in the xps line...

depends how long they take to phase it in :p

i remember when c2d first came out it was a headache to find an HP machine with the right specs - a lot of their stuff was still centrino duo etc.

edit: yes i agree with luke. they won't change the xps chassis SO soon. maybe add that new 16" the OP talked about.

perhaps all us enthusiasts can then trade our motherboards :p

I'm really hoping they refresh their graphics card offerings for the currents models (So I could possibly swap out my 8600m gt in the future).

    Okey Dokey ;)

I just feel that the movement from Crestline to Montevina will occur the same as last time when Dell moved from Calistoga in the last gen Inspirons - introduction of the new models and the continued selling of the older tech at lower price. It makes more business sense to sell a new package than the same as the old just with an updated board. And the older tech will be available until there commitments have run out.

My moneys on a new platform in a new design ;)

Would you consider the new chipset to be worth waiting for? If I don't really plan on changing anything within the laptop (i.e. the RAM) would it really make that much of a difference? The m1530 seems to be great and I need a new laptop, but I can force myself to wait for newer models with the Montevina if it's going to change things by a decent amount.

i would wait because probably after montevina, new GPUs will come out (ie. 9600m gt 9800 gtx...) just an fyi the vostro line of notebooks has also been upgraded so logicaly either the inspiron or XPS line will be targeted for changes next! yipee for me!

It's possible to see a change in models by the end of the summer. The M1210 was introduced about June 2006. The M1310 was around July 2007. So it's about that time. It would be interesting if anyone has compiled a Dell laptop timeline.

Yeah but when did the Inspiron 1525 come out? Wasn't it like October last year? And they are replacing that with teh 1535 at the end of May. Surely they will replace the XPS 1530 and 1330 before then. It would be complacent for them to not do it.
