I've never owned a computer that I didn't build. I've also never owned a laptop..and since I can't really build one...you get the idea.
I'm wanting to load Ubuntu on my m1330 (why was it not moddled m1337 for humor sake, i don't know), and its raising some questions about my partitions.
Is the recovery partition really needed? Couldn't I just burn a Vista Ultimate CD and use the key on the bottom of the laptop for installation, or do i need an OEM CD? Any reason what so ever to keep the restore partition?
Also I assume the Dell DirectMedia system doesn't save any marginal power over loading up windows and playing media...can anyone disprove this? I don't think i need it due to said reasoning and I know its easily restored so I'm contemplating trashing it.

having recently purchased my vostro 1500 i would be interested in knowing if the recovery partition is worth it too and also if media direct is worth it

Burn recovery discs and you can trash the partition. What you do with the DirectMedia partition is up to you.

when you say burn recovery discs you mean just burn the recovery partition onto a dvd i guess?

There should be a recovery disc creator or program with all new computers.
couple questions about pre-installed software and the recovery partition...
