    Sorry, I'm confused. What does the external DVD drive have to do with reformatting the notebook?

    It's reads CDs/DVDs... the D630 doesn't have an optical drive.

    Now I'm wondering if i will have trouble with using this, compatibility issues.

    No it will work fine to format your hard drive.

    I've been having an issue on vista with my D430.. SpeedStep seems to be not working, the processor stays at 1.2GHz (instead of underclocking to 800 when iddle, as it is supposed to). This makes the laptop very hot and the fans are almost all the time on.. I guess Battery wont last as much as if it was working...

    I am getting my referb D430 this Monday.

    I plan to flush everything out and refomat to XP SP2.

    Where can I control SpeedStep?
