    Alright so...

    here's the low down...
    want a student laptop...
    15.4 inch. WSXGA
    core duo processor...
    1 gb ram
    great battery life...
    80gb hd or bigger

    So.
i know there are acer's and lenovo's etc...
    but opinion...
    Dell d820 or 6400...
i've figured out that i can get a faster component 6400 for like 800$ less than a d820... but the d820 has the nice solid construction...
Any comments on the construction of the 6400?....
I want this laptop for 5 years of university(engineering)
I want a separate video card so both of these computers would work.

I was leaning towards the d820... but now... for 800 less.... a 6400?.... i'm gonna get the 3 year complete care warantee so i dont really need to worry so much about accidents.....

what do you think? d820 or 6400

Oh and... the quick snap covers for the 6400...
do they add any protection to the laptop... or any additional stability...

which colour is the best?... cuz if i got the 6400... i'd probably get a cover just for the fun of it :p

$800 less? are you kidding me? Thats weird, I dont think that is possible using the same config....what specs are you using? I would go for a D820 cause its much better construction and will last for longer than the E1505/6400 and also better graphics card. With the 9 cell batery (only $19 upgrade) the D820 will last for almost 7hrs.
I think that the quick snap covers are just new colors for the fun of it. Theyre the same ones as the i6000 rite?

the 6400 i can get with a T2500 processor, 1 gb ram, x1300 vid card, 100gb hd for liker 1299. CDN.

The 820 would cost much more.

One, on the d820 the 9 cell with the nice video card (110 or 120nvs) will not last 7 hours. Depending on various settings expect a max of 4 hours. More if you install the modular bay battery as well of course.

If price is an issue, just go with the 6400 and make sure you get complete care, and I'd order thru small business.

I just configured a E1505 and D820 with similar specs and there was a $400 difference at most. Where are you getting this $800 figure from? If you were to go all out on the warranty on the E1505 and not on the D820 they would be nearly the same price.

well right now... in canada at least...
    you get the 6400 for 1099 with the t2500 processor...and a videocard...1gb ram
the d820 starts at 1600 and costs 200$ for the t2500.. 120$ for the ram (yes i know you can get it cheaper later :p) 60$ for the 80gb hd, 150 for the dvd-rw, and 80 for the video card... making it... 610 more... so... 2410 for the d820...
of course if i did get the d820 i wouldn't get the t2500 processor....

would the 6400 be the best choice with the complete care warantee?

    -More expensive

    What they have in common

If you can afford the differantial, go for the Latitudes every time. They are worth every extra cent. But they are computers nevetherless - get complete cover to protect it over time of use, not just for the purchase date. Performance is seldom the issue. Design and quality in use is.
