Ok I have an inspiron 5100. It originally uses 200 Pin PC2100 DDR SODIMM. I was under the impression that as long as the ram was ddr(not ddr2) and was the same pin, it would work with the laptop.

    Now I bought this
    http://www.newegg.com/product/product.asp?item=N82E16820172108

which is 200-Pin DDR SO-DIMM DDR 400, the only difference is that it is pc3200. I bought 2 of these sticks and tried to see if it would work. It does not work unfortunately. Why is this? I thought it just had to be ddr and could be a higher speed.

So I guess this laptop only works with ddr 2100???!?!

good rule of thumb...if you didn't buy what it came with then don't count on it working.

3200 should work as DDR memory downclocks. Did you seat them properly?

I know I thought it would too, I thought it would work. I am 100% it was seated correctly. A professional tech, even checked it out as well. it didnt work.

chelet, wtf, i thought that didn't even matter a single bit. the only thing mattered were the specs. Can someone link me or show me pc3200 that 100% that works with the inspiron 5100? Is there a list perhaps that shows which brans are compatitable?

Well I would like to upgrade to a faster speed if at all possible. If it is not, well I guess thats ok too, but faster ram would be really sweet.
