i searched but couldn't find anything..

running E1405 rated at 667 ddr2.. only has 512 ram.. upgrading to 2GBx2..

question: will i see any benifits to using a ddr2 800 (pc6400) over the ddr2 667? i searched google but didn't see anything from a note books point of view.. i found ddr2 800 cards rated at 1.8v that are cheaper in price then ddr2 667.. any input would be great.. one i found was from patriot..

Not in any real life use you wouldnt see a difference.I would go for the 667 and save yourself a little bit of money.

The jump from 512mb of ram to 4gigs will be a great improvement in its self ;)

Before you buy it make sure that E1405 can use that much ram.I thought 2gigs was its max.

Also you need a 64bit Operating System to take advantage of 4gb of ram.

Get the cheaper 800mhz ram (might come in handy if you ever want to overclock your FSB).

the 800 was cheaper in price.. jeremysdad on here used 4GB and it's running 3.24G.. depending if the wife (it's gonna be mostly for her after a few months) would change to a diff OS.. i don't think she likes any others lol.. she stuck on win xp..

    1) The E1405 doesn't support 800MHz memory. If you buy 800MHz memory and run it stock, it will downclock to 667MHz. Likewise, 800MHz memory is generally cheaper these days, as mentioned.

    2) Even if the E1405 did support 800MHz memory, you wouldn't notice a significnant difference as mentioned as well.

All of these machines really should be able to run with any brand of memory paired with any other brand of memory; there should be a difference in memory compatibility between the 1405 and 1505.

Back in the day there were definitely laptops that were picky, but that was then and now is now. I suppose there are still instances where this can happen, but I'd imagine your E1405 issue had more to do with the fact that some 1505 (K-TRON's comes to mind) and 1405 just weren't happy with 4GB total.

I have a Dell e1405 also, and I am in the process of upgrading my ram. Here is the info I found through my online chat with Dell.

The laptop DOES support 800 MHz (PC2 6400) memory and of course you will benefit choosing this memory because it has the faster memory speed.

You may choose to go with the 2gb X 2 if you want. And your computer may recognize 3 GB or 3.5 GB if you have 32-bit and your bios is up to date. However, your laptop will not actually move at that speed because it only made at a max of 2048 MB.

No, while the machine may boot with 800 Mhz RAM, it will be downclocked to 667 or 533 (whichever your processor runs at, Max 667 for this machine), so no benefit will be gained.

Also, even with 64 bit OS, it will still only be able to use 3.25 or so, due to the 32 bit Memory controller these machines were graced with.

Your last statement makes no sense, really. No offense. Mine reports, when I'm 3-d designing, that it is using right at 3 GB of memory. So, it's lying to me? I don't understand what you meant there, I think a Dell rep was blowing smoke to get you off the line (or didn't know what they were talking about).
