ok, the Dell home site has a one day only (Tues. 1/12) 100.00 off most notebooks, which can be combined with the existing rebate and coupons offers.

so, my question is, does anyone have an opinion on whether this is as good as it is going to get, in light of the news that the new 6000 is coming soon to replace the 8600. I was intending to buy the 8600 and I am concerned that the price might drop, or that they will no longer sell them once the 6000 comes out. Certainly the 6000 sounds great, but for my needs, i would be quite happy with the 8600 and saving the extra money. What should i do?

You'll see better deals on the 8600 when the new units come out.

i was just pricing up an 8600 and when i got to the checkout pages, the 100 off would not come up with the 10% off coupon code, so it is kinda meaningless....you are better off with the 10% off coupon.

how long do you think the 8600 will remain in the product lineup after the new 6000 is available.

usually they'll sell through inventory in about a month, but I'm still not totally clear on whether the 6000 is truly a replacement for the 8600 (I thought the 700m replaced the 600m, but it didn't, and Dell will tell you they had intended it to be but the 600m continued to sell well so they kept it). In other words, it appears the 6000 will replace the 8600, but not a sure bet.
