Hey,
I have a Dell 1525, bought in April 08, about 3 months ago time started to get out of sync and multiple problems with battery "plugged in not charging."
So today after charging the battery from a friends external battery charger ( friend had same problem) I was updating the BIOS to A16 from A06 and when the laptop was restarting with the bios update I get a message saying "Time of Day Clock Stopped."
My question is if I replace the CMOS battery will this solve the problem?
Looking at dell documentation from
http://support.dell.com/support/edocs/systems/ins1525/en/SM/coinbatt.htm#wp1179839
looks tedious and time consuming but not hard.
Any suggestions if I should replace the CMOS battery? Not exactly a novice when it comes to computers but I have never worked inside a laptop. Been researching this "time issue" and "battery plugged in not charging" issue for a while and was trying to avoid having to change the motherboard. Appears battery is not charging due to lose connection between adapter and mobo. Even ordered an extra dell battery charger from ebay, supposed to come next week to avoid having to change the mobo or send the laptop into dell. Also b/c out of warranty better for me to just mess with it then send it in for repair.
Anyways should I just update the mobo as well or just start off with the CMOS battery? Any suggestions would also be appreciated.

sounds to me like you might have done something bad when you flashed the bios, try taking the CMOS battery out for a few mins and putting it back in again, see what that does

That definitely sounds like a CMOS battery issue. It's the cheapest and easiest replacement; you should start with that first.

Thank you hoji2g for your link showing how to replace the Cmos battery. I also have the Inspiron 1525 laptop and had the same error message appear. I removed the cmos battery for a few minutes before replacing it and putting the computer back together. The process of removing the battery is quite long and complex so take your time and be careful not to break anything.
Once you have taken the battery out for a few moments, placed back in and reboot the computer, the computer will state many things on the screen such as Time of Day Clock Stopped. Press F2 to enter the setup where you can set the time, once you have set the time, quit the setup utility and save changes. The computer should reboot without any problems apart from a few extra screens when it reboots for the first time.
Hope this helps -
I would like to thank everyone for their suggestions, looks like I will not have time to work on this until next weekend (exams).
I will be sure to post an update, once I complete it.
On a side note, since in order to get to the Cmos battery, the laptop must completely be disassembled, would anyone recommend a motherboard change?
My bigger problem is the fact that my battery is not being charged when connected. Before the laptop went 'kaput' Bios said, "unknown AC adapter." I am sure it is a connection issue on the mobo. I have ordered this from ebay

Should I just be content with this external charger and just replace the Cmos? I would be happy if I can just get another 1.5 yrs from this laptop.
btw, I was able to find this link from youtube regarding a mobo change for the 1525

(I guess this is what happens when you send it in for prof service, lol)
