hi all! well, my d600 seems to have bit the dust. i have a question. i would like to save the hard drive. i am looking at getting an ide to usb adapter. there are a bunch of them, and a lot of them seem pretty cheap. is there one that works well? perhaps there are some techs out there that use one of these things that have an opinion...

also- i would like one that has a power supply, and the ability to connect to ide and sata, considering whatevery new laptop i get will surely be sata...

    woot!

They all work well. I’ve used many of those cheap (~$10) drive enclosures and none of them had any problems.

oh, word. an enclosure would be another option as well. i was thinking of getting one of those adapters (w/o enclosure), but why not get an enclosure out of the deal? hehe..

here is a question... will an ide to usb enclosure work without a power adapter? i mean, will an inspiron 1100's usb ports power the drive? i have had problems with a d600 powering an external 2.5" HD. i don't know if the 1100 has 'low power' usb ports or anything...

As a matter of fact I know of one, that has everything, IDE, sata, comes with a AC adapter and connects via USB, you just take the internal drive plug in the cables and bam...

I'll look for the link bro.

Just to add to this. if the notebook drive uses 0.5 amps or less then it can be completely bus powered. I put together an external drive using a 120GB ide-based notebook drive and an external case using passive cooling and it powers completely off the bus. If you want to know which one I used then I can try to find the link on the site where I bought it.
