Given all the horror stories about the Dell D620 laptop screen quality I am slightly reluctant about purchasing this laptop. However, the small form factor with a high resolution screen and possibility to add a second battery are quite useful. Has anyone purchased a Dell D620 with a WXGA+ (1.440 x 900) screen recently and how was the screen quality on these laptops? I'm especially concerned about screen brightness and outdoors usability.

    Thanks!

It's a roll of the dice on what manufacturer makes the screen. It's tough to see this one outdoors. Brightness is decent and can be adjusted with the NVIDIA card.

What turns me off is the life of the battery. I am down to about 60% and it just past a year of use.

Any word on the D630 screens? I'm guessing since the D620 & D630 are very similar, the only thing that will change will be the motherboard and its internal components.

I am happy with the D620 overall. I multitask, burn DVDs, watch movies, take notes, do literature searches - sometimes all at once. :)

I feel good about the 3 year warranty, the durability (twice spilled small amounts of water onto the keyboards and dropped the D620 twice), the fast recharge, dual pointing devices, and the NVIDIA card.

The only other negative is that it is heavier than I expected. But...given the other pluses, I don't mind.

The latest version of the WXGA+ screen's still crap. I've been using this machine several hours a day, everyday for a month now, and I'm just now adjusting to the limited vertical viewing angle. It probably won't be an issue if you sit far back from your notebook, but I find myself readjusting the screen angle every time I shift in my seat.

I find the backlight leakage to be worse than most notebooks, but I use a black desktop background, so I probably notice it more than most people.

The latest iteration of the screen still suffers from the shimmering and graininess. I was hoping to use this computer for image editing, but that idea is pretty much out the window. Seriously, the screen makes images look much lower-quality than they actually are.

I find the screen totally usable in everything short of direct sunlight. I thought I'd miss having a glossy screen, but I think the matte finish is very satisfactory.

On the flipside, I still think this machine was a good choice, especially since I got it refurbished. I like the higher resolution combined with the 14.1" form factor, and the build quality is fantastic. I can lift it by a corner and there's zero chassis flex. Plus, I like the dual pointing devices. I never even use the touchpad.

Unless you're looking to pick one up cheap through the outlet, I'd wait on the D630 and see if the screen has improved any.

I can confirm in talking to Dell they have increased the brightness on the D630 display to about 220 nits, which is vastly better than the 160 - 180 nits the D620 came with.

The current WXGA+ screens on the Dell Latitude D620 have 220 nits.

EDIT: I checked the Dell website and the WXGA screens have increased to 220 nits.
