    Hello
i have a ell d630 with a single 1gb ram module. i wanted to take that one out in replace it with 2 512Mb modules from another computer (i want to buy another 2gb module for that one so i'll have 3 gb) So after following both the instructions I saw in this forum and the one on dell's site. I closed everything up and tried to boot.

The computer wouldn't even beep. It's dead.
Although when there is a battery attached while the ac is in the charge led powers on.

I tried everything, I took the module out and the back in, I tested it on another laptop (its ok) and at one point I thought that maybe I accidently disconnected the keyboard so I disconnected it and reconnected it.

    Please help.

    Thanks in advance

The first thing you need to do is calm down, in other words don't freak out because your computer is probably ok. You need to trace back what you did and try and find the problem.

    1) Will the machine come on with the battery only?
    2) Will the machine boot with the battery only?
    3) Did you put back the original memory to see if the problem went away?
    4) Did you double, triple check to make sure the keyboard is absolutely seated properly in the connector?
    5) Did you double, triple, quadruple check that the memory modules are seated correctly in the D630 and that they are not ****ed to one side?

    thanks for the quick reply
    1. no
    2. no
    3. yes that was the first thing i did
    4. yes, i pushed it in, pulled it out what more could i try
    5. yes, i would think that there could be something wrong with the way i'm putting it in, but the other computer seems to not have a problem with the way i'm inserting them.

    again thanks

*Did you by chance touch something metal prior to removing the memory modules in your D630? I live in a high humidity area so it's not such a big concern for me. But I still do it nonetheless.

The next step I would suggest is disconnect the AC adapter and remove the battery. Let the computer sit for at least 15 minutes. Also unplug any devices to the laptop like minicards, USB devices etc. Can you think back? Did you remove the battery and unplug the laptop before you removed the keyboard or memory module? It's a dumb question but something you need to do before going to work on a laptop.

Next plug in the AC adapter and turn on the laptop. Check to see if the backlight on the screen comes on. You may need to find a dark area like a closet or something.

If it you do see the backlight come on then that means your getting power to the laptop. Do you know the key to press to get to the BIOS? I know on my Vostro it's F2. Try and see if you can get to the BIOS.

I'm going to post two links from the service manual for the D630. The first is for installing memory modules.
    http://support.dell.com/support/edocs/systems/latd630/en/SM_EN/memory.htm#wp1084976

The second is for replacing your keyboard.
    http://support.dell.com/support/edocs/systems/latd630/en/SM_EN/keyboard.htm#wp1084976

Make sure everything looks the way they do in the pictures. Repeat both steps so that you don't miss anything and hopefully a lightbulb will go off and you can find the problem. :)
