I think you would install it the same way you would XP. I have heard that it is not worth it to buy Vista now and do a install lots of problems. It is better to buy a new laptop with it installed already because lots of drivers are no good

so if i install the new hard drive in the laptop.I turn on the laptop and put the vista ultimate dvd in , does the laptop recognized the dvd and start installation automatically. or do i have to have some type of boot disk?

Yes as long as its not an "upgrade" disk it will boot off it.

As for the lack of drivers this isn't true and the guy above has heard wrong most of the drivers for this laptop are out on Dells own site even the 4-in-1 card reader now.

The only drivers which are iffy are the gfx drivers but they will get better with time, XP had all this 6 years ago.

i would wait a few months befor installin vista you will run into software that wont run yet and also right now vista is slower then xp theirs some reviews floating around vista is 5-18% slower in differt areas then xp.

This is true but i have yet to run into any which wont work.

iTunes 7, BF2142, HL2, PowerDVD 7.2, Fireworks 8, Cuteftp XP, Winrar 3.51, NOD32, Media player Classic, all my codecs all work fine.

Yes BF2142/HL2 are a little slower but tbh it was to be expected give it 2 months or less and they will be on par with XP (XP was slower at first).

I still have XP on another disk i just swap them around when i want to use XP (not much this week tbh)

If you have a "FULL" version of Vista Ultimate it should be a quite painless process. If you have an "upgrade" disc you'll need to do a little extra steps but I would have you read the blogs on that. I had Win XP MCE on my laptop and I had gotten the business RTM of Vista Ultimate. I set the bios so that the DVD was the first Bootable device. You'll probably have to do the same. And as long as the HD is recognized under the BIOS, then just boot from the Disc and follow the on screen instructions. After Vista is installed you'll need to make sure you get the latest Drivers either from Dell's website or the manufacturers. After I installed Vista I had to get the Synaptics Touchpad utility and I'm just waiting on a 64bit driver for my Ricoh SD reader. Still works using Windows default drivers.

During bootup and before the splash screen you'll usually see how to access the BIOS. From what I recall it is F2.
