Unfortunately, your options are probably quite limited. Download and run CPU-Z, and tell us what your chipset is, under the "Mainboard" tab.

Looking at some Inspiron 2500 reviews and the P3 processor options, I think this 1.1 GHz Coppermine core P3 is your best option. However, I don't know if your processor is actually replaceable (some laptops have them soldered on, and I have no idea what Dell did back in 2001), so you'll want to check that first.

And really, you'd probably be better off just saving up for a cheap laptop today. For $350 you could probably snag one that would blow even the upgraded 2500 out of the water. It's just not cost-effective to upgrade that old of a system.

The processor on the 2500 is replaceable: http://support.dell.com/support/edocs/systems/ins2500/en/sm_en/remove.htm#1051352. The 815 chipset in the 2500 should support a 66MHz to 133MHz FSB, and thus you should be able to use any Mobile Pentium III.

Looking on eBay, a Mobile PIII up to 1.2GHz is pretty damn cheap, so there's no reason not to try it out. Dunno if you'll actually get much of a boost out of a couple hundred extra MHz, though.
