isnt the 1.1Ghz somewhat of a disappointment for its price?
-
you're not paying so much for the processor as the fact it costs more to manufacturer smaller specialty parts so everything fits in a smaller package that is the X1.
-
I am surprised though that they're not offering the 1.2 yet. They should soon, so that will be a small benefit. As for the price, as noted, you're paying for more than the CPU.

Is it in principle possible to overclock this 1.1 GHz ULV processor, at least for short time (to avoid overheating) when one really needs a good arythmetic performance to do some application?
What is actually the difference between ULV PMs and usual PMs? In fact, using the rmclock program I managed to undervolt my 2GHz processor to 1.148V at 2GHz.
1.6GHz PMs can be undervolted back to the specs of ULVs while still operating at 1.6GHz.
I made an experiment and limited the clock of my 2GHz Pentium 755 to 1.1 GHz.
After undervolting it was running prime95 stable with only 0.780 V (0.796 without fan) at 1.1GHz and 0.7V at 600MHz. Super pi 2M calculation was running 2min 50 sec, i.e. the same as X1. When I forcefully turned the fan off when running prime95 at 1.1GHz, the CPU temperature has reached 72°C and stabilised then (it was around 20°C in the room).
It is similar to the behavior of 1.1GHz ULV processor?
So, are the ULV processors just undervolted (specially selected deeply undervoltable) and underclocked PMs? What is the point of underclocking them then?
Do ULV processors have better temperature range to work without fans? Are thy technologically superior in some sense?
Does the speedstep technology work for ULV processors? What are the clock steps for 1.1GHz ULV processor in Dell X1?
Can I use the rmclock program with this processor to undervolt it even deeper in order to produce even less heat? Did someone try it?
Somehow I found it difficult to find answers to these questions on the web.
Last question: what is the chassis of dell x1 made of? Is it proper for the passive cooling? -
I hear of a lot of people getting by with the 1.1 - it's not as slow as it sounds.
