i dont think you can change the order after ordering it. they are going to cancel your order and re-order.

Not always true... if your order is still in pre-production, it still can be changed through the order modification department. If you ordered through EPP though, it's a complex route of phone numbers (and I'm still going in circles trying to find it).

you're allowed to change it but usually that puts you to the back of the line. based on my understanding, for them to make any changes to your spec or the price they have to physically make a new order. they'll keep the price quota they gave you with the same specs and they'll just change the specs and change the price as well.

if your lower your specs they usually offer you dell gift coupons or other items (mouses, bags, etc) that dont affect the order. that way they dont have to make a new order and just ship the items / coupons to you (sometimes before, sometimes with, sometimes after)

If you change your order chances are good that you will lose all coupons /discounts

i donno guys... from my personal experience, they reorder for you. i ordered the vostro 1400 with matte screen by accident and called back 2 hours later to change it to glossy. the rep told me i have to cancel and reorder in order to get the glossy screen.

I ordered my 16 days ago and I recently changed my cpu in my order by calling the salesdepartment.

They said the order wil be delayed by "some days" because of the change.

I personally think it will be like one week delayed...

As previously mentioned, yes there is such a department as the "modification department" however they don't modify anything, they just have the ability to create new orders with more master options (like real expedite requests) and maintaining all original discounts. However, you will get a new order number, you will get pushed back to the end of the line, and you will be receiving your system later than originally estimated.
