try to check if your userinit.exe in the system32 dir still exist,
more information about this will be great, this can be everything from missing file to virus

Use the Vista DVD and choose the "recover broken OS" option, see if that helps.

i did recover to get the ability to chose between the two OS but i can only boot vista when the AHCI is enabled in the setup and xp can only boot when the other option is enabled(cant remember the name)
this deals with the SATA hard drive

I'm guessing the machine will BSoD when the incompatible option is selected?

You've got two options here. You can change the SATA mode to ATA and re-install Vista or you can change the SATA mode to ATA, get into XP, load the appropriate AHCI drivers (usually in the form of the Intel Matrix drivers), change the SATA mode back to AHCI, and that should get the thing working.

Plenty of guides floating around as to how to install the AHCI drivers. It's kind of finicky; I just run everything in ATA mode.

Yes, change the mode to ATA, go into XP, load new drivers which will tell you to reboot, then change mode back to AHCI and try to load XP again.

I also dual boot my system but since I reinstall it every 4 months or so, I don't even bother with AHCI. The benefits are negligible while the setup is a PITA.
