i just my m1210 recently. i'm very peculiar when it comes to screens, and my backlight just seemed to bleed too much light. making the background a solid black would look atrocious. dell premium xps support said they only have 1 replacement screen on file, so all the screens are the same.

i have an insprion 700m, 12" widescreen, same thing as my m1210. except my screen rocks on my 700m. oddly enough, my x-girlfriend got the same 700m, and her screen looks like my new m1210's screen...horrible. both of my screens on my m1210 and my 700m were both manufactured by AUO, but the viewing angle is extraordinarily different between the two. From 10 degrees off my m1210 screen starts to go bright, then to a negative. it's very disappointing, and almost a laughing stock how it compares to my 700m.

hopefully come tuesday, the screen might be different. turning the brightness down, running diagnostics, nothing will change it on the software side. i'm almost keen on the idea of some how swapping my impeccably perfect 700m screen for my m1210 screen. i haven't looked into this, since i got a premium 4 year warranty i would actually like to keep, but at this rate, it might govern whether or not i could actually leave my 700m for my m1210.

    Thanks.

This is a common issue/problem (M1210's LCD not that good). Just go over to the "other" forum & you'll see for yourself how much the LCD issues have been discussed! :)

well the technician came. the screen was replaced...with another auo screen. i really don't know what to do anymore. the technician saw it, and he thought it may be the graphics card. we were looking at the xps background that comes with the m1210. the gray gradient looks as if its in 16 bit or so. i don't get it because my games run great, everything is in full color, so i can't figure out if its my graphics card that is creating this bleeding light / horrible viewing angle. the technician said out of lg, samsung, and auo that the samsung screens were the best. my x-girlfriend who had a screen very similar to my xps, had it in her 700m, that came with integrated graphics, no graphics card at all, so that led me to believe it wasn't the graphics card. maybe i'll have dell replace it again 6 months down the road, that's what they said their turnaround for manufacturers is.

He's not totally right. Dell ships M1210 with LCD screens from one of the following manufacturers:

    AUO
    Samsung
    Toshiba-Matsushita

By the way, LG-Philips do not make 12.1" LCDs for laptops.

    Lejon,

You don't have any defective hardware. It's the nature of the LCD Dell is using in their XPS M1210's. Personally, I believe the LCD used in the 700m is one of the best looking screens Dell has ever used. Unfortunately, it is an older model, and those screens aren't made anymore, and they are not compatible with the M1210.

My M1210 has exactly the same visual issues as yours does. It's practically impossible to get your eyes at just the right angle to keep the screen uniform. If there was a way to make a 700m screen work in a M1210, i'd go out an buy a 700m LCD in a heartbeat. But, alas, you're stuck with what you have.

I have had 2 M1210's side-by-side...one with AUO and one with Toshiba screen. The Toshiba is even worse. I have Dell sending a replacement for that unit--they said it would be a Samsung. I'll let you know how that works out.

It isn't going to get any better, so maybe you should return the M1210 and get a different model if you are not happy.

thx for the replies guys, i've been using the comp for about a week now and am totally comfortable with it as is...as long as i don't open my 700m lol.

i'd like to hear about the samsung screen. i got lg and toshiba mixed i think...i was the one asking the technician which out of the three are better, but i don't recall if he even knew the manufacturers.

i have a couple off topic questions:

can i hook this up to a dell 20" widescreen? and or do i need hacked inf drivers for dual screen? do core 2 duo stickers exist?? i got a....centrino duo sticker ><

Dell has to learn their lesson. With charging premium for XPS while giving the cheapest LCD quality they can. It's understandable when they sell the laptop for $600 that is has a so/so lcd but for $1500 thats unacceptable.

Return that notebook and tell them your returning it because of their ****ty LCD.

Dont settle for that LCD. Otherwise they will continue to use cheapest quality LCDs on future models as well.

    I agree :D
My M90 had an LCD with non-uniform backlighting - there was a dark patch, with strong lighting around it.
Had it been an E1705, I might have kept quiet, but for an M90, no way. I got it replaced, the new screen rocks.
