Ok I just got my daughters dell for xmas, and I hate the screen it is not vibrant like my hp pavilion.. it looks like it has a different look on the screen. My hp the colors are crystal clear the dell seems grainy ( I don't even know it thats the Right word) it just looks faded out and not clear??? anybody know what I'm taking about???? I'm not crazy it looks way different...

Call Dell and exchange it - get a screen to your satisfaction.

Doesn't the Pavilion line have glossy screens as opposed to the Vostro which has matte?

LOL. Seriously stay with the matte screen. Buying a 1400 or 1420 is like playing Russian Roulette and theres 4 bullets in a 6 bullet chamber. Odds are you can try to get a good glossy screen, but it will most likely have a grainy screen. So, you will basically have the same lack of vibrance and a reflection to boot!

And if you want to replace your screen, of course they will ship you another one. Exception is that it will be a refurbished unit, as stated in their contract, even if youre within your 30 day satisfaction. It will more than likely have problems of its own. Im on about my 5th replacement. Good luck. Stay with what you have. Trust us.

I am considering getting a 1400 and am looking into the wxga+ screen....but after reading about all of the problems it has I'm not so sure.

Are you pretty much guaranteed to get a decent screen with wxga?

I think ann41 just wants a nice crisp, vibrant screen. No matter how much you compare glossy to matte, glossy will always have better color "pop". If you want to return it and get the 1420 for the glossy, that's fine too. The 1400 and 1420 are basically the same.

I think I read somewhere that Vostro's have Samsung screens now. I have a Samsung WXGA on my T61 and it's very nice. You can check it out in my signature, but I'm not sure if it's a fair comparison for Dell and Lenovo.

Sometimes searching helps, other times its buried in a long forum.

control panel > system > hardware tab > device manger > monitors > pnp monitor > properties > details > hardware ID drop down list box

Haha, Chi mei optoelectronics manufactured the panel for my 42" 1080p desktop monitor. :D

What about WXGA+ screens? (rather than WXGA screens) - does Dell still put the crappy AUO panels in them?

I think I'd be fine with a Samsung or a CMO (chi mei) panel...I spent some time at best buy looking at the various laptops there and those screens were passable. The only not so good samsungs I've seen are the 15.4" 1680x1050 ones.
