i know the dell laptops aren't that good in term of build quality... but what about their top of the line xps systems? i'm specifically talking about the xps m140.

    thanks!

The Dell XPS M140 is not a gaming notebook if that's what you mean. It's got integrated graphics - horrid for gaming. In terms of build quality, the XPS should be about average. Dell hasn't really spent a lot to make the notebook top-notch, thats for sure. I suggest looking at other 14" models, such as the Compaq V2000/Z series, the HP dv1000 series, and the Toshiba Satellite M50 series.

i'm so lost in terms of what to get for school. right now, i've narrowed it down to the asus z63a, w3v, or powerbook.

how do the laptops you've mentioned compare to the ones i named?

The notebooks you mentioned, espeically the Asus' are a lot better than the dv1000/V2000 series. I thought you were on a tight budget when you mentioned the XPS, but I guess not :p The Asus' and the PowerBook will all have great build quality/design.

I'd go for the W3V if you can, great build quality and design. It runs a bit hot though. You should read the review of the W3V on this site to get more familiar with the model.

I'd go for the PowerBook if you are unhappy with Windows, or want something new. Be aware that you will not have nearly the software selection with a Mac as you do on a PC.

Yes - decide on the Operating System first, then choose. ;)
