i was at bestbuy yesterday looking at the notebooks, and sort of wanted to get a dell, since i participate at the dell forums, and would also like to have a dell product, laptop.... i was sort of dissappointed at the dells chasis,s on their notebooks, they did not look appealing...the 1520, 1525, and even the m1530(a bit better looking than the former two), thought they were not-WOW-looking... then i saw the hp dv6870se, clay edtion, and said WOW.. even hp,s verve edtion is eye catching..... why is dell not responding to hp,s stap at them....when i was at bestbuy, most everyone was looking at the two hps, i mentioned...you would think michael dell would notice?

Every machine has its pros and cons, and every company has to strike balance based on what the customers want.
HPs are frequently criticized for overheating and the lack of better GPUs. Dells are usually criticized for build quality and bland looks.
It's all about choosing a few things out of a large list of possible engineering decisions. -
If you care about looks and don't care about performance, buy an HP, and install Vista.
If you care about performance and don't care about looks, buy a Dell and install XP.
Just kidding.
Just choose what you're happiest with. I looked at HPs before I bought my Vostro, and although I liked the looks, I found the texture of the touch-pad awful. A real deal breaker. Oh, and they were much more expensive than Dells. -
The Vostro 1400 is a very solid notebook. Personally, when I went into a store, people were looking at the HPs, but when I looked at them, I saw cheap, flimsy plastic in places, and extreme heat on some spots.

I had a very nice looking HP that I bought from BEST BUY last year. Won't do that again as it ran way too hot and probably why I had to send it in 4 times for a new motherboard. Finally gave up and got a XPS m1530. See my post on that:
HP repair "Good/Bad/Ugly" just went very UGLY!!!

The XPS line was Dell's response to the HP consumer line. HP is the #1 laptop brand now and Dell is #2. After being at the top for years, perhaps Dell got lazy. You could say the sleeping giant (dell) is finally waking up. Dell just recently started selling in retail stores. They realize the customer wants to see and feel the product and the product has to be thinner and flashier.
I think with the new Latitude line coming (in June?) we may see some flash and substance at the same time. Those new latitudes should be better built than XPS and better looking than the Thinkpads and current D series. We'll see. But, yes, Dell should be paying more attention to quality in XPS. -
@jack53 - FYI, Bestbuy has started selling 1530's too.. I saw it when I went there last weekend.
@ronss -Any design is a matter of perception. If you don't like what you are getting with Dell, try getting something else. There IS a huge market share for the 1330 which swears by it just for the looks! -
thanks everyone for your input...not sure what i am going to do yet, i have a hp dv6000t, and it works great... but its a year old, and was thiniking of upgrading...that is why i was at bestbuy scanning my possible future notebook. one thing about dell, you can get some killer deals at the dell outlet...might take that route..the hp clay edtion really is nice, but can only get it at bestbuy, though it might be an option on the hp site. don,t get me wrong, i am a big dell supporter,,, i thought the inspiron 6400 was reallly nice notebook,,, and it sold well...
it was definitly the m1530,,,, i looked twice... -

They did, the M1530 and M1330 were their response really, since they are better looking at much more sleek than the previous generations. But really as somebody has previously said, some customers care more about the hardware inside the machine, than how the thing actually looks. I know i am.
