so I just received my new dell laptop today. its got a 17 inch truelife wuxga screen, which is 1920x1200 pixels, and I also got the nvidia geforce go 7900 gs graphics card with 256mb. text and everything looks great, but most pictures, banners, etc on the web, even the big word google on the search engines' page have a bit of a jagged look to them. should I adjust my settings somehow to get rid of this, or is it something like my screen has a higher resolution than those images?

    try changing your dpi settings

    right click desktop,
    settings tab,
Under General, DPI settings to normal, 96 dpi

oh, ok. I coulda sworn it was at 96 when I started the computer up. I had changed it to 160 dpi to make the text nice and large. isn't there anyway to get a happy medium? because now that it's back to 96, the jagged edges went away, but the text is super tiny.

if you are planning on upgrading to vista, that will supposedly fix it for you, in xp you dont have many options

    Hi,

what you might also try when text looks too sharp to you is to adjust your display settings in the NVidia Control Panel. I didn't like the default setting on my display very much, it was too much brightness and contrast for my eyes, so I screwed them down a little bit and now it's perfetly fine. When you've found comfortable settings, write them down, because installing a new driver will bring you back to the default settings.

I used to have that screen, and I know what you mean about the images. I'm not sure there's really anything that can be done about it though.

Also, try looking up a feature called ClearType. That may help with the fonts if you're still not satisfied with what you're getting.

thanks for the help guys, but the problem isn't that the TEXT is too sharp, but that images have jagged edges when I try to have things higher than 96dpi. I wanted to run it around 150 dpi to have nice large text, but that causes the image problems.

The native dpi of that screen is about 130 dpi. That sounds like a happy medium between 96 dpi and 160 dpi, doesn't it ?
