There is no difference besides the lettering on the case. In the US it's the e1705 (and 9400 on small business) and abroad it's the 9400. Get whichever is cheaper at the time. They are the same.

There are quite a few options available as far as TV Tuners are concerned. Hauppauge, ATI, and Pinnacle are quite reputable. Hauppauge has a HDTV tuner as well. You can find them at CompUSA, Bestbuy, CircuitCity, buy.com and amazon.com, among others. You might want to shop around for a good price.

Is it also true that the 9400 doesn't come with all the Dell bloatware since it's a "business" machine?

9400s over here do, only Latitudes (and probably Precisions) don't have bloatware.

wow so vast number to chose from..the e1705 has a media player option with tv tuner but i cant find the brand and model of that tv tuner..do you have any idea what that tv tuner is?...ive noteiced that most tv tuners are built in cards unlike that of the hauppauge hdtv which i think is very easy to use..or im just not really familiar with tv tuners as i dont have any idea bawt it..one more thing..the hauppauge hdtv has a somewhat portable antenna where you can use anywhere.does that tv tuner option from dell has portable antenna as well? by narrowing the choices what would you recommend, the tv tuner option from dell configuration or hauppauge hdtv tuner? im sorry as i dont really have any idea bwt this..tnks much!

I think Dell includes its own branded TV tuner similar to this one. I dont think it has a portable antenna. You should look at external USB TV tuners from Hauppauge, ATI, Pinnacle, etc. I think the Hauppauge HDTV tuner is pretty good.

You made a good choice. If you do get that Dell draft N wireless, you'll have to get a Draft N router, which is quite expensive (around $100 or so). For the Intel 3945 a/g, you can get any router with A or G wireless protocols. The most popular at the moment, is the G protocol. Linksys, Netgear and D-Link make the best routers.

If cost is not a major issue for you then go with the Draft-n wireless for your laptop if you plan to use your laptop often at public places or hot-spots or if you would be travelling etc. If you live in a big house or a multi story house with a garden then you would be better off with a router that supports draft-n otherwise a router with 802.11 b/g should be more than sufficient. By mid-2007 most of the notebooks with intel wifi card will have draft-n. Right now I think only dell and lenovo offers draft-n option for their notebooks.

You don't have to get a draft-n router to use a draft-n card. The card will happily connect to an a/b/g router just fine. OTOH if you want to use its full potential then you may want to consider a draft-n router in the future.

Also you can check with your neighbour what type of router they using and if they are willing to share the bandwidth. If they are friendly and got the n-thing then it will work out good for you.

what about build quality difference between these 2 versions of the 'claimed' identical laptops.. i mean isnt there like a cooling fan difference or something because the prices are more flexible on the 9400 on dell.com than the e1705 but that could just be with the current specials and coupons..... someone explain this to me because Im leaning away from getting a hp dv9000t laptop for these appeared to be amazing dell offers..

EDIT: also in this thread discussing the type of LCD the e1705 uses -- http://forum.notebookreview.com/showthread.php?t=92124 it mentions the newer model of LCD used on this laptop has an 8ms response time as the specs show here - http://www.auo.com/auoDEV/products.php?sec=notebook&func=info&product_id=69&items_id=2

So Id like to know what the 9400 specs are on its LCD if anyone has them

I have the draft N card in my 1505 and connect every day to a Buffalo WHR-HP-G54 MIMO G Router with No problems. Granted...broadcom chip with broadcom chip...but there is no problem with this card. I have Verizon FiOS and they supply an Actiontec G54 router (not a very good one) and the Draft N card connected to it with no issues, either. The whole thing is that it is Draft N, but as far as G/B...it is totally backward compatible. Then, in the future as N shakes out a bit...(according to Tom's Hardware the Inten-si-fi from Broadcom is the lead candidate for final N)...the Draft N card should work fine. I wanted to prepare for what's coming and have compatibility with today as well. I know that there is a school of thought out there to avoid Draft N...I don't belong to that school. Read the Dell support forums...just as many issues with the Intel G card
