what are the big differences between these two laptops (if i customized them to be the same specs, 2.0ghz dual core, 2gig ram, 160 gb 5400, 128 mb 8400m gs)? it's mainly for school + a little guild wars here and there. i like the inspiron because of the choice of colors and it's good price, but i don't know anything about the vostro except for it's only available in black. any comments?

I would suggest the Vostro, because of its protective sealant around the keyboard and the magnesium alloy casing (or something like that). It comes free of bloatware, and Im extremely satisfied with my Vostro 1500, so I suggest going with the 1400 (Yes, it only comes in black, however I like the look of it- very professional)

PS- Priced out a Vostro 1400 for $878 with your specs (Standard Warranty, extra $$ for 2yr/3yr etc.)
    Inspiron 1420 is $1124 W/ Std. Warranty.

Search the forum, people are always asking this. Basically the only difference is color.

Any differences are software in which with the Vostro, you can opt out of the only bloatware Dell adds.

Go for the Vostro 1400. They are both the EXACT same except the vostro comes in black (looks better) and it comes free of bloatware AND 90% of the time it is alot cheaper even when both the 1400 and 1420 have the same specs.
