I haven't turned my computer off (laptop or desktop) at night since 2002. I don't mean that it's always been on, but my general usage pattern has been to leave them on 24/7 unless I need to move it or there is a power problem.

No modern PC will have any problems. The OS will shut down the hard drive & monitor to conserve power and such after a certain amount of time.

yea you can leave it on for extensive periods without problems. the only problem it will cause is a jump in your electric bill due to additional power usage compared to if you turned it off.

The average home computer costs about $70 to run 24/7 per year. They don't draw all that much power when idling & with the monitor off.

Maybe $100 at most if you're on it often. A laptop doesn't draw anywhere close to 300-400W at load, and would probably run you about $30-50 to leave on for 365 days straight.

No, especially if you have it spin down the drives after 30-40min.

Laptops wear out alot faster then desktops because of ventulation, and the lack of it. Heat, especially constant heat, is never a good thing for a computer, and with a notebook with limited cooling, it could have a prolonged effect in the end.

should last many years. my stepmom's 600mhz dell is still going strong, except the hard drive is starting to be finicky.

the things that fails first are usually media drives like your hard drive or optical drive. but they're easily replacable.

The backlight on the LCd will burn out eventually, I wouldnt leave it on 24/7, nor would I leave the computer on full all the time, standby mode should be fine.

The LCD should last longer then the notebook itself. As mentioned, it can be easily turned off when its not in use.

Actually, a laptop doesn't even draw 90W at load. Just look at the ac-adapter and you will see it's 90W one on current Dell notebooks.
I would rather suggest that a 1520 draws 50W idle and maybe 80W load.

the 1420 draws max ~48W in consumption using a 65W PSU according to http://www.dell.com/downloads/global/corporate/environ/Insp_1420.pdf . with that broken down, assuming max usage of laptop 24/7/365, that boils down to about an extra $37US/year on an electric bill using a residential energy rate of $.09548/kWh for July to October and $.08548/kWh for November to June.

Yeah, 48W isn't really much. Current notebooks consume so little power.
If i remember my P4 Prescott 3,2Ghz desktop, oh well that's a heater, consumes so much power.

A desktop with a 800 watt PSU doesnt draw 800 watts all the time, actually it will never draw that much, it uses as much as it needs, idle and light load tasks wont draw much at all.
